God’s Aroma Of Christ Is You!

My daddy, smells like Jesus.

I am sure during your lifetime, dear readers, you have heard someone use at least one of the following idioms referencing the nose:

  • Cut Off Your Nose to Spite Your Face
  • Have Your Nose in the Air
  • It’s No Skin Off My (Your) Nose (Back)
  • Keep Your Nose Clean
  • On the Nose
  • Powder One’s Nose
  • Right Under (One’s) Nose
  • Rub Someone’s Nose in (Something)
  • Stick Your Nose into Something
  • Have a Nose for (Something)

Well, while reading and meditating over 2 Corinthians 2:1-17, the Holy Spirit allowed me to obtain a more profitable understanding of God’s holy Word as recorded by the Apostle Paul. The entire chapter demonstrates that Paul is a peace maker extraordinaire.

To briefly summaries Chapter 2…

The Apostle Paul has written a letter to the Church at Corinth, rather than making a second personal visit, suggesting (no imploring) that they consider forgiving a church member who had been spreading lies about him and the way he demonstrates his faith in Jesus Christ. The troublemaker was saying that Paul preaches out of both sides of his mouth and seemingly, the members of the Church at Corinth believed those lies and were forming negative opinions about the character of Paul.

In the letter, Paul is explaining why he has chosen not to make a second visit in person as promised, because he is still feeling some pain about how members of the Church of Corinth so readily embraced the untruths of the troublemaker. Paul also feels that perhaps the Church members may also need some space. So, Paul is explaining in his letter that he does not desire that the perpetrator be punished for his actions, and if the Church forgives the man, then Paul will also forgive him because that is exactly what Christ would do. Paul reminds the congregation that nobody wants to give Satan another opportunity to wreck havoc in the family of God.

The nose, nose…

Now this is the beautiful part of Paul’s letter. Paul explains to the Corinth Church that as we grow in grace in Jesus Christ, He matures us and gives us victory in our endeavors (battles) on His behalf. The Holy Spirit also gives us inexplicable knowledge of Himself and breathes within us an exquisite aroma that only His true followers can spread abroad. This sweet scent ascends all the way up to Glory which God recognizes and rewards with dispensing eternal life. Other brothers and sisters who are walking in the light recognize the scent, too, and rejoice. But those on the road to destruction smell the stench of a dead man walking.

What aroma is in your nostrils?…

I don’t know about you, but when I was a child, my nickname was ‘Cry Baby’, because somebody was always hurting my feelings. And I was also the last one picked on anybody’s team when my siblings and friends played games. I wanted everybody to like me, and when they didn’t, I pouted. I was also very gullible as a child and believed people when I should have been more discerning. But thanks be to God and my Sunday School teacher. They both taught me how to pray. Little by little, I learned to depend on the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit did the rest. During middle school and high school I met new friends and because of my good grades, art talents and I also want to add my ‘giving’ spirit, I was well on my way to trusting and serving the Lord. I guess I just “smelled” good.

There’s a sweet, sweet spirit in the air. Where of, I am glad.

My prayer for you…

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your sweet presence in my life when I was lost, self-centered, and without hope. Please forgive me for my inherent ignorance of the gospel of Jesus Christ which you have written on the tablets of all of our hearts. I praise you, Holy Father, for coming into my life and opening doors that nobody can shut and for lifting me above the enemies of this world. Help me, Lord Jesus, to remember to thank you for every blessing You so willing bestow upon me and everyone who can relate to this blog revelation. For we are all so undeserving of the ultimate sacrifice you made on our behalf. We ask all of these blessings in the precious Name of Jesus. Amen and Amen.

Scripture Lesson: “Thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.” (2 Corinthians 2:14).

God Is No Respecter of Person…He Has No Favorites!

Have you ever been elevated to a position of leadership when your audience or subjects were composed of persons older than yourself, who were far wealthier, accomplished, prestigious or deserving of that same position?  Were you made to feel intimidated because of this?  Did it effect your leadership ability and cause you to treat certain people differently than others?  Such as categorizing people into groups and effecting your judgement of others impartially?  Or being reluctant to institute certain directives that could further the positive accomplishments of your assigned duties?

Be honest!  Face the music!  Admit your frustrations!

Why? Because if you make a concerted effort to bring your burdens and cares to the Lord Jesus Christ and leave them there, He has the power to deliver comfort, wisdom, reassurance and peace to your soul.  There are so many biblical scriptures recorded on this subject in the New Testament that can be used as your guide, if you will just avail yourself to them.  Following is a verse that mostly reveals this truth:

1 Peter 1:17  “And remember that your heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites when he judges.  He will judge you with perfect justice for everything you do; so, act in reverent fear of him from now on until you get to heaven.”

Not everybody lives by that verse.

Let’s review the godly requirements listed above in order to receive this confidence.  First, you must be in active communication with the Father through practicing a regular prayer life.  Second, you must trust the Father’s judgement.  And third, you must carry out your acts of duty knowing that you, too, will be judged on how you impart them.

True story…

There was a time in my life when I found myself in a precarious position that fostered envy and strife.  Back in the day of deep segregation towards minorities, and when I had just graduated from high school and had finished an additional two-year secretarial course, I was hired as a clerk/typist at the General Motors car division headquarters building in Detroit, Michigan.  At that time, my typing skills were 90 wpm, and my Greg shorthand skills were 140 wpm.  My supervisors in the typing pool, acknowledged my sharp and fast skill abilities and often ‘loaned/assigned’ me out to other departments whenever they needed extra help; but never allowed me to be considered for promotion to a higher paying clerical position mainly because of my race.

Black Lives Matter Word Cloud on a white background.

Usually, a clerk/typist/stenographer with half of my skill abilities was promoted out of the typing pool in less than 24 months of being hired to a higher paying position in the company.  But my superiors detained me for more than six years in the typing pool for no other reason than the color of my skin.

Finally, due to outside political pressures, and the good insight of a godly human relations department manager at GM, I was promoted out of the typing pool and assigned to work as secretary to a junior executive of General Motors.  As it turned out, I worked in an open office area with 3 other secretaries who clerked for their own executive.  However, the other secretaries disallowed me to interact with them and did not share the norms of their inner circle office environment with me.  Nevertheless, because the executive I clerked for was the senior executive among the other 3 executives, my boss set the standards for office protocol, assignments and office clerical duties.  Guess what…that made me the distributor of those duties.

Now, here is our assignment for this area.

You can imagine how my assignment responsibilities were received by the other 3 secretaries in the open office area.  When the secretaries did not perform their work that I re-assigned to them to do that would benefit their bosses, the girls lied and said I never gave them their assignments or that I was incompetent in my directions or even challenged my authority to engage them.  Eventually, I was called into my bosses’ office and reprimanded.  He told me if I could not perform my duties in supervising the other people, he would have to get somebody else to do my job who could.

Now, what my boss did not know about me was that I was a praying sistah!  My prayers had finally lifted me out of the original typing pool where I had languished for six years and elevated me to my current position as secretary to a junior executive.  And if he thought that I had lost trust in my Savior’s judgement and had become weak and timid in executing my authority, he was badly mistaken.  Before leaving his office, I had assured him I had a plan that would produce positive results in a matter of weeks as to how the otter offices would perform in a positive and productive manner that he would be proud of.

Well, for weeks thereafter, I emerged myself in reading 1st and 2nd Timothy and found encouragement in the words of wisdom Paul imparted to young Timothy.  I prayed and asked God to empower me like he did Timothy.  God reminded me that there is great gain in performing my duties with godliness and in contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.  So, you, young woman of God, just know that I am a lifter of heads, and just as I lifted you out of your earlier predicament six years ago, I can do it again.  Have faith, walk upright, and wait on the Lord.

Honestly, within one week after I continually prayed that prayer and waited on God, the Holy Spirit entered the work force and softened the hearts of those other people in the office and they overcame their opposition to me and in due time, all went well.  I never held their prior conducts against them nor showed impartiality.  When my boss and the other executives openly complimented me on my office skills and expertise, I received them gracefully and without braggadocio.  Those early employment years were rough, but with the Lord’s help and presence, I made it through. God reassured me that he was no respecter of persons, nor did he have favorites. Thank you God for being a heart fixer and a mind regulator!

My prayer for you: “Dear Lord, thank you for making us children of the light who will from this day forward do what is good and right and true: Help us to expose sin in the workplace and be willing to work on our own relationships with other people in an impartial mannerism. In the precious Name of Jesus I pray. Amen!

Scripture Lesson: “You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth). Ephesians 5:8-9

God Sent The Holy Spirit As My Teacher

Image result for oxymoron examples in bible
Hummm…Now let me think…

Sometimes, the Bible doesn’t make since. It takes on the characteristics of being an ‘oxymoron‘! Ooops! Be careful sister blogger. You may be treading on dangerous grounds.

Well…not exactly!

Let’s carefully look at the meaning of ‘oxymoron’. Basically, an ‘oxymoron’ is a set of contradictory words placed together in a sentence or a thought. It’s usually a descriptive term (an adjective followed by a noun or pronoun). For example, in Revelation 1:8 it reads: “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. In another place, Jesus invites us to live the ultimate oxymoron: celebrate suffering: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 4:4 And yet, in another place: “It is better to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35b.

Now, tell me; don’t those three examples above sound a little confusing? Yet there are hundreds more examples in God’s word that mimic those truths and require deliberate prayer and intervention of the Holy Spirit to gain a deeper and meaningful understanding. And that’s what I have been praying for all this week…in all my getting, Lord, give me an understanding of thy Word! (Proverbs 4:7)

Make it plain, dear Jesus…make it plan! Please order my steps in your Word, King Jesus.

Take a look at the list below of terms the Holy Spirit placed in my spirit that are covered throughout the pages of both the Old and the New Testaments, and considered to be classified as an oxymoron or a paradox concept:

Love and hate.  Good and evil.  Live and die.  Rich and poor.  Strong and weak.  Heaven and Hell.  Up and down.  Young and old.  Male and female.  Right and wrong.  Give and take.  God and Satan.  Jews and Gentiles.  Lion and Lamb.  Pride and Humility.  Wisdom and Foolishness.  War and Peace. Revelation and Hidden.  Just and Unjust. Peace and Enmity. Weak and Strong. Save and Destroy. Love and Hate.

So, the benefits of studying oxymorons or paradoxes in God’s Word is so that our reward will be, if we remain in Jesus and the Father’s Word remains in us, we will be able to ask Him for anything and have the confidence that He will give it to us. And when we can recognize in Scripture that the message is written with the use of oxymorons, we will be able to pray God’s word back to him with a clearer understanding and application. You will then be studying to show yourself approved…rightly dividing the Word of God. The key is to make God’s word your words.

My prayer for you….

“Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us heavenly knowledge by the dispensation of the Holy Spirit. Oh Lord, it is our heart’s desire to remain steadfast and unmovable in your Word. And, Most Holy One, we thank you for giving us your promise to honor the things that we ask in your Name. Continue, Holy Spirit, to teach us just how to use your Bible to honor all your precepts correctly, so that we will all be built up spiritually and able to share in all your many blessings that you have promised us.” Amen!

Scripture Lesson: “If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.” John 15:7

God’s Giving Trumps My Giving

What Is Grace?
Giving has everything to do with walking in grace!

How often do you wish you could operate in the same mindset as Christ? The older I get, the more I wish I could be more and more like Jesus each and every day. Why? Because I truly believe that this octogenarian is more apt to see Him face to face sooner than later. So now you can see, like a little child, why I implore Him to order my steps in His word on a minute by minute basis.

That is why for this week’s blog I decided to have a little conversation with God on the subject of giving. As I was examining my life, I wondered if my habits towards giving were in line with God’s concept of giving. The Holy Spirit challenged me in my mind if my giving was truly by grace. If that was the case, then, I was in concert with God’s attitude towards giving. This trend of thought caused me to search the scriptures on ‘grace‘. And what I was reminded of is just how magnanimous God’s grace is:

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9

And the companion scripture for the above mentioned one is the following:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Begotten Son that whoever believed in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

It is because of those scriptures sited above, that many people believe that God’s method of giving far surpasses any mortal’s expression of giving hands down. In other words, God gives whether you deserve it or not. God’s giving which is by grace is not about Karma! Karma is all about getting what you deserve. Grace is all about getting what you don’t deserve!

We live in a society of ‘getting’, that calls for the judgment of someone else:….I deserve this…You owe me that…You promised me…

If we are walking by faith, God teaches us through scriptures, that all that mankind deserves is death, and that, in and of itself, bears no hope for restitution; except by the blood of his resurrected Son Jesus the Christ.

So, the Holy Spirit continued instructing me by whispering, My child, spiritual growth does not happen over night. You grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, and you have passed the test. Keep on searching and depending on the Lord and encouraging others to do the same. For with grace, it will allow your giving to transform other’s desires, motivations and behavior.

Therefore, My Beloved, always remember when you give to others, make sure it is in the attitude of love and not based on merit…that is, whether that person deserves it or not…let God be the ultimate Judge.

Scripture Lesson: “For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who (unselfishly) gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.” Titus 2:11-14 (Revised Standard Version)
