God Allowed His Son To Express His Woes Towards Others!

Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! (Matthew 23:13a)

Most of the “woes” in the Bible were expressed vocally by Christ Jesus and directed critically towards the Scribes and Pharisees. An expressed woe usually means that someone has experienced long suffering from an affliction, or a grief, or experienced a misfortune brought on by someone else. There are seven distinct woes in the Bible that relate to the attitudes, mannerisms, and teachings of the majority of the Scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ day, that brought Him deep anguish.

A SYNOPSIS OF THE 7 DISTINCT WOES IN THE BIBLE AGAINST THE PHARISEES AND SCRIBES:

  1. They taught about God, but did not love God – they did not enter the kingdom of God themselves, nor did they let others enter.
  2. They mostly preached about God, but actually converted people to dead religion.
  3. They taught that an oath sworn by the temple or altar was not binding, but that if sworn by any of the ornaments of the temple, it was binding.
  4. They taught the law, but did not practice some of the most important parts of the law.
  5. They presented an appearance of being ‘clean’ (self-restrained, not involved in carnal matters), but they were dirty inside.
  6. They exhibited themselves as righteous on account of being scrupulous keepers of the law but were, in fact, not righteous.
  7. They professed a high regard for the dead prophets of old and claimed that they would never have persecuted and murdered prophets when, in fact, they were cut from the same cloth.

IN TODAY’S WORLD PEOPLE EXPRESS THEIR WOES THROUGH WRITING AND SINGING THE BLUES:

Some years ago, I sincerely thought about the above subject matter…God’s attitude towards administering woes to his disobedient and hurtful children…when I was assigned homework in my writing class to compose a poem about ethnic musical heritage. The distinct class of music I chose to write about was entitled “Using Your Miseries To Write Blues Poems”. Blues poetry is the manner in which several minority groups and disadvantage people turn to using their miseries and woes as lyrics to compose songs of sorrow and disillusions. The genre is called The Blues. Following are a few stanzas of my rendition of how and why this was done. (By the way, I’m not implying that this is the way or method Jesus Christ used to chastise the Scribes and Pharisees. But they sure did give Jesus the blues.)

“USING YOUR MISERIES TO WRITE BLUES POEMS” A Poem Composed By S. Fowler, Blogger

Did you know that blues ain't just a song to be sung
Or bells to be rung
But blues could be a word to be written
As poetry on a page by you
A prolific and highly expressive sage.

Now the blues when sung in a poetic rhythm
Got its origin in the United States
Back some one hundred years ago
Squarely in the African-American race
Whose dialogue is rich in composing rhymes and playing 'the dozens'.

For the most part, blues is born out of our misery and what life is all about
Like the Negro field hand working in the cotton gins of the South
They often complained about their troubles through a call and response
Hiding their true feelings in the lines of a song
Fooling their 'masters' who were oblivious of what was going on.

Now when writing the blues as just poetry for fun
It can take on two forms none of which are sung
The classic or traditional style is well liked
Because a set formula causes each line to rhyme
And sets the tone for the subject to be defined.

The second style of blues poetry is called free verse
Which can be written any way the poet wishes to converse
As long as it depicts life's sufferings and complaints
Without rhyming or using a set meter to express one's fate
About being jobless, down and out, heart broken or got no date.

Most of the time the title of the blues poem sets the tone
Often witty or sarcastic of just forlorn
The poem seeks to offer a solution to our problems at hand
But many times it just repeats itself over and over again
And asks the reader to just accept what God has dealt a man.

There are a few literary blues 'greats' who have come and who have gone
Robert Johnson, the famous blues singer who picked his guitar
An exceptionally talented performer who sang his songs near and far
Some people said he sold his soul to the Devil
In exchange for his talent, loose women and fast cars.

Another famous blues entertainer was County Collin, the writer
He did not sing his miseries he just wrote them down for others
Many of his lyrics were written on a political note
On subjects that affected mostly only Black folks
One of his poems being, "Life For Me Ain't Been No Crystal Stair."

Repetition of lines is very important in the blues poem
It re-emphasizes problems and lets you know how deep the trouble has gone
Sometimes when Nikki Giovani writes her poems she puts herself in them
Which makes the meaning of the poem all the more serious
And allows the reader to personally see him or herself in it.

"When I woke up this morning, my taxes were overdue,
My roof was leaking and my corns were hurting, too.
Yes, when I woke up this morning, my taxes were overdue,
I said my roof was leaking and my corns were hurting, too.
But I'll tell you one thing, Baby, I'm sure 'nuf' through with you."

Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of how the blues got its name
It's all about singing or chanting what's in your heart that draws pain
When the days seem so dark and the sun refuses to shine
God gives you the words, so go ahead, why not pen a line
And see if you don't feel better real soon, after you have written for a time.

My Prayer For You…

Dear Heavenly Father, We all so much want to become imitators of You. We truly want to proclaim Your message and live in such a way that people will be able to see from our actions that we are serious about our faith and about performing and living it out by mimicking and walking in Your footsteps. But most of all, Dear Jesus, as we walk along the seashores on the beaches of life, when we look down at our feet, we want to see only one set of foot prints, knowing that You and You alone are the One Who is carrying us. Amen and Amen!

Scripture Lesson: “You became imitators of us and of the Lord. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia — your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it”. (1 Thessalonians 1:6, 8)

God Designed Families To Be A Blessing And A Gift

Family and friends together at the holidays. color
Families and friends are a blessing and a gift and also good for your health!

Just look at that family gathering in the picture above. How happy and content they all look. I wonder if they know that was God’s plan from the very beginning; the making of happy families! I wonder if the father figure of this household knows just how important his role is in nurturing his god-given responsibilities. Below is a list (especially for fathers and heads of households) of 10 Lines on Importance of Family:

10 Lines on Importance of Family

Have you noticed that as generations come and go, people have less and less time to nurture family relationships. People are just too busy doing other things rather than to shoulder their responsibilities in raising up a child in the way he/she should go, so that when they are old they will not depart from their teaching. (Paraphrased from Proverbs 22:6)

A Personal Testimony…

Along with my mom and dad, there were 5 children in my family. As I recall my childhood experiences with my siblings, our dad used to play word-games with us very subtly: For example, when dad came home from work, he would gather up us kids and asked us a question. “What do you call cheese that’s not yours? Come on, answer me. Who ever answers the question right gets a quarter.” No answer. Complete silence. “Nacho cheese!” dad would say in his deep ethnic dialect. Then dad would belt out a great big laugh and gather us all under his massive arms. Honestly, we didn’t know whether to laugh or cry because dad slipped the quarter back in his pocket. But one thing we did know for sure…we felt secured and safe and we loved him all the more.

Fast forward…

There have also been times in my adult life that I had wished I could have telephoned my father to hear one of his word-games just to cheer me up. But he went home to glory at the early age of 49 years old. I needed him to help me fight my surmountable battles. Oh, yes, our mom was still with us, but she needed dad’s wisdom, strength, common sense and caring personality more than we did. For you know what they say about mothers; she is only as happy as the unhappiest member of her clan. In fact, dad’s own 7 brothers and sisters also missed him more than ever. I remember my aunts and uncles all, scheduled an appointment with their private physicians for a health check up very soon after dad’s early death.

My earthly father made sure that his family cultivated a solid relationship with the Lord. Only one of my siblings have strayed in their walk, and one other is desperately searching for answers about a loss of a child. But family prayers are being sent up on their behalves. Why? Because we know God is able to overcome all our doubts and fears.

My prayer for you…

My dad was a trail blazer who left us a family legacy that we were to always depend on our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, because He would carry us through. So my prayer for you is this: Heavenly Father, I thank You very much for having placed me into a family of believers. I also trust that You, in Your wisdom, showed kindness and compassion for all those who may have suffered hurt, harm and danger and had to subjugate their birth family for an adopt one. Help us all to spend more time with the families you have placed us in and please, My Lord, reassure us each and every day of Your love and peace. Amen.

God Blesses Us Even While We Are In The “Wilderness”

Oh boy! I’m lost! I don’t know which way to go! And I don’t think anybody knows I’m out here! What shall I do?

Would you agree with me that usually, before a person surrenders to God, he or she is poor in spirit. This mindset could be manifested by the following emotions: Rejection. Confusion. Despondency. Introverted. Nervous chatter or giggling, etc., etc. More often than not, sadness is triggered by the absence of someone or something valued which now has been lost, or seemingly unattainable. Sometimes, these same emotions are felt by those persons who have accepted the Lord, but are not rooted and grounded in His word. Nevertheless, both groups can be identified as spiritually bankrupt.

This week let’s explore what it means when we quote one of the most famous Beatitudes: “Blessed are the poor in spirit for they shall see God.” (Luke 6:20-21) This biblical verse could be classified as an example of an idiom because its figurative meaning does not line up with its literal meaning. (You might ask just how can a down-trodden poor in spirit person, who is lost in the woods, be considered Blessed by God.)

Well, just keep reading…

How many people do you know that are just wandering around in life, doing their own thing. Or listening to and following bad advice. Going from one misguided decision to another. Just downright out in left field, wasting time, money, resources, strength, and their health. Thus, that person is extremely poor in spirit. But wait! Will they actually ‘see God’? Is there hope on the horizon?

YES! Because in all of thy getting, (and if they live long enough by the grace of God), and through all of their setbacks, one day they will surrender. That will be their day of reckoning (while they are lost in the woods). That day is when they will be receptive to the Word of God. So far, they have actually been in the wilderness of life. Now, they are ready to come out of their wilderness or misguided thought pattern of existence.

But first they must realize just Who, anonymously, was always in the wilderness with them. God was always with that person, but God had not shown himself. However, now that the person is ready (has come to him/herself), God will show himself. For God blesses the meek by attending his ear towards them.

Now the question is, how will God show himself! To Moses, God showed up within a Burning Bush. The burning bush represents all the troubles and riotous living and bad mistakes people indulge in. The fire within the bush is God recalling a person’s misdeeds into his/her physic and hotly burns up those misdeeds but not consuming them entirely. This is God’s way of destroying the evidence. Remember this; God allows adversities to come into our lives to shape our character.

Mankind must also participate in this refurbishing process as well. Man’s way of submission in all of this is for him to take off his shoes (like Moses) prior to approaching God, and to also get off of that harmful, destructive and dangerous road of perdition he has been traveling on.

Why all of this preparation…

Because now, our imaginary lost soul is standing before God…standing on God’s path called Holy Ground. God instantly changes the person’s name to Moses which means he has been drawn out of the waters of confusion. (In Scripture, water represents trouble. Jesus conquered water by walking on it…putting it under His feet!)

In conclusion…

Jesus Christ has conquered that wilderness that we all go through from time to time, but we just don’t see or recognize Him. We cannot see Him as long as we allow ourselves to be slaves to the devil (darkness). We must come to realize that when the scales fall from our eyes and we finally see God, we become somebody. We can say, “I AM somebody in/with Christ Jesus!”

Since God and Jesus are One, all God has to say to the Moseses’ of this world is; ‘I AM who I AM’. (I Am the Father God, and I Am the Son.)

So now that the sinner man who finds himself lost in the woods and barefooted (has put off error), and is standing on Holy Ground (God’s Word), before a bush (man’s troubles) that is on fire (the 3rd Person of the Trinity), but not being destroyed (the bush is not consumed because trouble will always be with us), now the sinner man who has been brought into the Light is ready to receive his assignment and to begin to work for God/Jesus/Holy spirit, instead of Satan.

My Prayer for All is simply: Thank God we once were all lost, but now we all can be found. We were all once blind, but now we all can see by the aide of the Holy Spirit. Amen and Amen!

Scripture Lesson:When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through the fire you shall not be burned; and the flame shall not consume you.” Isaiah 43:2

God, In A Still Small Voice, Has Good News For Single Folks!

STOP! in the name of love…think it over.

How about a little nostalgia? For this week’s blog, I would like for you to take a little stroll with me down memory lane. What prompted this sentimental journey, you might asked? Well, this week I received a facebook message from a long lost friend from my past. He and I were both young adults at the time, and members of the same church located in a small town in Maryland, USA. Since I was also a Sunday School teacher at that time, and assigned to teach a co-ed teenage class, the president of a young adult Bible Study group invited me to be a facilitator at a workshop for single folks during an upcoming weekend conference retreat.

What an amazing opportunity, I thought, to broaden and share my ever-expanding spiritual growth in the Lord. For He (the Holy Spirit) had certainly been taking me on mystical journeys, as He opened up the inner most meanings of God’s holy scriptures during my devotional study time. However, so far, I had not received any indication that I was to share or do anything corporately with this new in depth spiritual knowledge.

Wow, what a nice surprise. To be remembered after all these years.

Therefore, I attributed the subject matter for this week’s blog to that unexpected (out of the blue) facebook greeting from a long lost friend. Obviously, the ole adage, ‘Out of sight, out of mind,’ is not necessarily true.

So, in early December, 1996, while preparing for that young adult workshop that I was to facilitate at that weekend retreat, I ran across a newly published book by Dr. Jeremiah Wright, entitled Good News For Single Folk. After praying over all the materials I had gathered, and after receiving spiritual confirmation that all was well, following is what happened.

At first, as I began developing an outline from the materials, I experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit, big time! It seemed as though I was being hindered from developing my outline because I was starting from the wrong premise. As I raised my pen to cross out yet another sentence for the umpteenth time, I paused. Something supernatural was happening. Someone was calling my name. In a whisper I said, “Speak Lord.” Immediately, I was led to turn in the scriptures to Luke 19:10b: “...for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

With trepidation, I softly inquired of the Holy Spirit what exactly was it that was lost and how does it apply to singles. Again, I was led to read several additional scriptures in Genesis 3:21-24. There, we find all of the provisions and disciplines God administered to ‘fallen’ mankind.

  • We were to be clothed in garments of skin because we had lost our glorified bodies.
  • We now knew good from evil, thus we lost our innocence. Therefore we have no excuse.
  • Our minds became befuddled and we didn’t know what was good for us. In other words, we lost our freedom of choice.
  • Physical Death was ushered in and we lost external life.
  • We were banished from the Garden of Eden and lost our eternal home and all the luxuries that went with it.
  • And finally, because of the Guardian Angels with the flaming swords, we lost easy access to the Way. God placed stumbling blocks in our paths.

Once again, I humbled myself and asked the Lord what does this have to do with singles? God said to me; Tell the class that because of the acts of the first couple, (Adam and Eve), the sanctity of marriage was also abridged. Divorce and unfaithfulness are imminent. But, the Good News is Jesus Christ! He is the Bridegroom Who would never be unfaithful to His God nor to His bride (us).

So, in His communion time with me, Jesus, in a still small voice, put forth this proposition…Since married couples are considered single in My Father’s eyes (and the two shall be one), and single people are already single, tell everybody in your Young Adult Sunday School Class to marry Me! Let’s elope before you have time to get lost again!

My prayer for singles…

Dear Heavenly Father: Please protect the intimacy and oneness you have instituted in the relationships of courting young peoples and other couples in general. For it is only with Your protection can they guard their hearts against temptation and keep it from all hurt, harm and influences from outsiders. It is also my prayer that You keep their hearts focused on Your nuptial vows so that their spirits may become one in Your sight. Never allow the couples to ignore or turn from seeking solace from each other before they abandon all hope in You and in reconciliation. I pray this prayer in the Matchless Name of Christ Jesus, Amen!

Scripture Lesson: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one. Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate.” Mark 10:7-9.
