This is the final blog post I will be publishing concerning the subject on “God alone”, my brother and I had some 40 years ago. You will recall in Part 1, I shared a personal discussion (did I say ‘heated’ discussion?) we had on a deep theological disagreement on the personage of Jesus Christ. Since my brother had recently died with a firm belief that God alone would receive him into heaven without his having to confess Christ Jesus as his personal Savior. At the time of our disagreement, I was trying to convert him to Christianity and the acceptance of the Son of God as a propitiation for mankind’s sins.

I have since learned that…”So then neither is he that planted any thing, neither he that watered; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planted and he that watered are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.” 1 Corinthians 3:6-9 KJV

So, now, let’s come to the conclusion of the matter:

25. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor; for we are members one of another. 26. Be ye angry, and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27. Neither give place to the devil. 28. Let him that stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needs. 29. Let no corrupt communi- cation proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edify- ing that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice; 32. And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Yes, My Lord. It’s me standing in the need of Your consultation and prayers. Why is this so? Because three weeks ago I lost my last male sibling who died professing his loyalty to God alone but not ever acknowledging God’s Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

Where did my brother go, my Lord? I need your wisdom and closure. (Speak, Holy Spirit. My prayer for our session is in the song lyrics below. Please click, hear my plea for direction, and console me.)

I remember vividly that Monday afternoon on June 27, 1983, (some 40 years ago) while visiting my brother in Michigan (USA). I guess you can say we were having a heated discussion on the subject…’How can a person believe in God but not his Son, Jesus Christ.‘ My brother was more confident in his persuasiveness in our discussion than I was in mine. (He had been apostatized*.) He could talk louder and had a better track record for followers of the ‘God alone’ theory than I had in effectively leading others to become followers of Christianity. Which for me is the only true Gospel.

I recall that our conversation had become so toxic that I fled the living room, ran upstairs, fell on my knees in my bedroom and sobbed uncontrollably.

In due time, I received several revelations from God on this subject and I began to keep a diary of my thoughts. Now, some 40 years later, I would like to share with my blog followers and others, just how God dealt with me through his holy word. The telling of this saga (which will be presented in parts) will no doubt extend through the remaining Fridays in 2023. So stay tuned.

1. Therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2. With all lowliness and meekness, with long suffering, forbearing one another in love. 3. Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.		Even though you disagree, disagree in love. Don’t allow your thoughts and actions to divide the Spirit. For the Spirit is one and the Spirit is peace. So if you go away “Mad” the Lord was not at all in your conversation.
4. There is one body, and one Spirit even as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6. One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.		Even as ye are called in one hope of your calling… Even though we are called, not all answer. But as we are all called, God hopes that we all will answer.

7. But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. 8. Wherefore he said, ‘When he ascended up on high he led a host of captives, and gave gifts unto men’. 9. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10. He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11. But now “grace” is something different. You can’t have grace unless you accept, belief in Christ and along with grace comes a gift. In other words, you receive a two-fold package. Christ is the keeper of all gifts and when He gives freely and we receive it and some of us ask, “What have I to do with this?” “What have I done to receive a gift?” And Christ answered, When I went up on high I lead the Prisoners of the Lord (the Captives) (those persons who believe in the “one faith, one baptism, Lord, etc.) and I freely gave them a gift once we got there. All the gifts Christ gave out were vocations. In other words, the gifts called for interacting with others. Sharing the “One’s” or sharing the “Good News”.

The month of November has been set aside as a time to give thanks. Let’s look at some of the ways people in America celebrate it.

Have you ever wondered what do clasped hands pointing upward towards heaven have to do with God? Well, according to several references from a Google search, it has to do with an acronym I have penned…R-O-S-S. Repentance – Obedience-Submission-Sincerity

However, needless to say, we have a higher authority than Google…do we not?

When the Patriarchs and holy men of the bible prayed unto the Lord, they often spread out their hands towards heaven. And the wisest man in the Bible (Solomon) went a step further; he also knelt on his knees (1 Kings 9:54).

So, at the beginning of this holiday season, let us posture ourselves in a position of repentance, obedience, submission and sincerity and call upon the Name of the Lord while doing so on bended knees.

As you mature in Christ, broaden your prayer time to include the widows, orphans, homeless, calamity dispossessed victims, jobless, sick and shut-ins, governments, the lost, backsliders, friends, wars and rumors of wars, and relatives and most of all…PEACE!

WHY?…

Because God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son that who so ever believed on Him should not parish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Today I led a co-ed discussion group of seniors at my church on the subject of “Spiritual Disciplines”. In fact, that’s my monthly assignment for this group. The president of this senior ministry asked me to be the featured moderator on the 4th Thursday of each month to lead invigorating discussions and prompting effecting action on any subject I choose. So far, the sessions have been very stimulating and beneficial to those in attendance.

I began the discussion by asking the audience to give me their definition for “Spiritual Disciplines”. After a brief silence, someone said, ‘when I hear the word spiritual, I think of God’. Very good, I exclaimed. Now define disciplines. Well, that’s when God…STOP! I said! Say no more! (Whom the member was about to identify would have been a misnomer…a wrong or inaccurate use of a name or term. And I did not want her to mistakenly name the wrong player. The member was about to name God which would have been wrong. The second word (disciplines) is the responsibility of a person to carry out. Not God’s!

Definition for “Spiritual Disciplines”

As a follower of Jesus Christ, these (disciplines) are the intentional and deliberate acts of each believer’s conduct to enhance their spiritual growth and that will transform and change their interaction with the Holy Spirit. But in order to experience a healthy spiritual growth, you must listen to the Holy Spirit and put into practice God’s advice.

Suggested habits/disciplines to institute in your daily life.

l. Bible reading – This exercise, if practiced on a daily basis, is like a super-charged spiritual diet. It provides raw material that the Holy Spirit can use to renew your mind and transform your heart.

2. Bible study and prayer – This is different from Bible Reading. Every Christian should from time to time join a bible study group and engage in group and/or corporate praying. Just keep in mind that anything can be a spiritual discipline (habitually performing this act) if it develops better habits, makes you aware of Jesus’ presence or changes behaviors that makes growth difficult.

What shall I watch next? I’ve got nothing but time.

3. Bible Memorization – By making a concerting effort to committing key passages to memory, you can incorporate Scripture into your disciplines. Choose passages that are particularly meaningful and can help you share your faith with others.

4. Stewardship – Have you yet come to the realization that God is the ultimate owner of everything and you are just his manager. If God instructs you to donate a certain amount of your wages (income) to your place of worship are you obedient only if no financial emergency arises? Why not make a ‘discipline’ vow to obey God regardless of any impending financial circumstance. And stick to it! Generosity is a critical discipline that trains Jesus followers to appropriate God’s resources better and be more thankful and appreciative of God’s blessings.

5. Fellowship – Jesus gave us more than an invitation to develop a relation with God when He preached that the Kingdom of God is at Hand. (Jesus Christ Himself was God’s kingdom and steward over all of God’s possessions, including salvation.) And just as Jesus came to reconcile mankind back to God, we, too, ought to be reconciled to our fellowman, relative, persons of different ethnicity etc. And we should make a concerted effort to love everybody.

6. Fasting – Most people think of fasting as denying yourself food in order to focus your attention on prayer and other spiritual pursuits. However, food is not the only thing you can fast with. Think about it! How about refusing to become engaged in gossip or foul language. Flirting on the job or pocketing office supplies when nobody is looking. Now my next suggestions will require some serious thinking. How about fasting from putting off until tomorrow what you can accomplish today. In other words, fasting from laziness, non-dependability, making hollow promises, etc.

7. Silence – Did you know that many people set aside time in a day to just sit alone with God where they can appreciate silence. If your scene is outdoors, just take in all of God’s creation. Be thankful. Be amazed. Be enriched. Speak to the birds. Call on the butterflies. Feed the squirrels. Shout to God with a voice of triumph. You get the picture.

Scripture Lesson: “Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales. Rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:7-8

When was the last time you had an “Ah-Haa” moment?  Was it last week, yesterday or maybe this morning?  Mine was just now!  Just as I began to compose my thoughts for this week’s blog, the Lord shouted in a loud voice, “STOP in the name of love, before you break my heart.  Think it over.”  Doo wop, doo wop!”

Well, I exaggerated.  The angels were not really blasting out The Supremes 1965 hit song, but I thought it was a great opener for what I am about to share with you (for the second time) concerning just how much God loves proof reading our writings, publishing and promoting our hieroglyphics on how we use His written word as a form of our worship.

Honestly, when life throws me a lemon, one of the most expressive ways I’ve found to cope is by journaling, or writing my grief down somewhere.  And my first thoughts this morning when I awoke were the Holy Spirit whispering to me, my child, that is just what I do…envelop someone’s heart to write things down.  (My “Ah-Haa” moment.)  You see, God is actually the Author and Finisher of our faith….who would-a-thought!

So, what are some examples in the Bible of God’s references to writing things down?  I’m so glad you asked.

• As a Prosecuting Attorney, God said:  “Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.”  Luke 1:3-4
• As a Supreme Ruler, God said:  “This is what the Lord said, the God of Israel, says:  ‘Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.’”  Jeremiah 30:2a
• As the Master Teacher, God said:  “Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”  Deuteronomy 6:9
• Under the direction of the Holy Spirit, Paul wrote:  “You (the Corinthians) yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody.  You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”  2 Corinthians 3:2-3

Needless to say, one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day!

I realize that there are other acceptable ways Believers in Christ pay homage to Him, for example:

1. By worshiping through music.
2. By worshiping in fasting and praying.
3. By worshiping conducting Bible study.
4. By fostering unity in the body of Christ.

But for me, worshiping while journaling allows me to laugh out loud with Him, debate with Him, cry with Him, rejoice with Him, shout with Him, run with Him, Love on Him, and most of all submit to Him.

The man on the left is not a picture of my grandfather, Daddy Bob, but it reminds me of him sitting in the wooden bench swing on his front porch on a warm Spring day, slowly pumping himself back and forth as he read his Bible.  We grandchildren knew not to disturb him, but we could watch him as he from time to time looked up at the rolling clouds in the bright blue sky and spit out his tobacco.  Next, he would take his pencil from behind his ear and underlined something he had just read in the Bible.  How I longed for a peek at that page.  But that was Grandpa’s own private conversation with God and I knew he expected God to answer him in His own good time.

You may be wondering how you can use the written word as a form of worship?  May I suggest you try writing down your first positive thoughts of your day.  And in the evening pick up that list and write down how each thought was accomplished.  Did you make it happen?  Did someone else make it happen?  Was God in the mix?  Then turn it all over to Jesus in your closing written prayer.  Collect these precious pieces of paper and you will be on your way to worshipping while journaling.   Then you, too, will agree that to journal is a wonderful form of expression.

How about a little nostalgia? For this week’s blog, I would like for you to take a little stroll with me down memory lane. What prompted this sentimental journey, you might asked? Well, this week I received a facebook message from a long lost friend from my past. He and I were both young adults at the time, and members of the same church located in a small town in Maryland, USA. Since I was also a Sunday School teacher at that time, and assigned to teach a co-ed teenage class, the president of a young adult Bible Study group invited me to be a facilitator at a workshop for single folks during an upcoming weekend conference retreat.

What an amazing opportunity, I thought, to broaden and share my ever-expanding spiritual growth in the Lord. For He (the Holy Spirit) had certainly been taking me on mystical journeys, as He opened up the inner most meanings of God’s holy scriptures during my devotional study time. However, so far, I had not received any indication that I was to share or do anything corporately with this new in depth spiritual knowledge.

Therefore, I attributed the subject matter for this week’s blog to that unexpected (out of the blue) facebook greeting from a long lost friend. Obviously, the ole adage, ‘Out of sight, out of mind,’ is not necessarily true.

So, in early December, 1996, while preparing for that young adult workshop that I was to facilitate at that weekend retreat, I ran across a newly published book by Dr. Jeremiah Wright, entitled Good News For Single Folk. After praying over all the materials I had gathered, and after receiving spiritual confirmation that all was well, following is what happened.

At first, as I began developing an outline from the materials, I experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit, big time! It seemed as though I was being hindered from developing my outline because I was starting from the wrong premise. As I raised my pen to cross out yet another sentence for the umpteenth time, I paused. Something supernatural was happening. Someone was calling my name. In a whisper I said, “Speak Lord.” Immediately, I was led to turn in the scriptures to Luke 19:10b: “...for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

With trepidation, I softly inquired of the Holy Spirit what exactly was it that was lost and how does it apply to singles. Again, I was led to read several additional scriptures in Genesis 3:21-24. There, we find all of the provisions and disciplines God administered to ‘fallen’ mankind.

• We were to be clothed in garments of skin because we had lost our glorified bodies.
• We now knew good from evil, thus we lost our innocence. Therefore we have no excuse.
• Our minds became befuddled and we didn’t know what was good for us. In other words, we lost our freedom of choice.
• Physical Death was ushered in and we lost external life.
• We were banished from the Garden of Eden and lost our eternal home and all the luxuries that went with it.
• And finally, because of the Guardian Angels with the flaming swords, we lost easy access to the Way. God placed stumbling blocks in our paths.

Once again, I humbled myself and asked the Lord what does this have to do with singles? God said to me; Tell the class that because of the acts of the first couple, (Adam and Eve), the sanctity of marriage was also abridged. Divorce and unfaithfulness are imminent. But, the Good News is Jesus Christ! He is the Bridegroom Who would never be unfaithful to His God nor to His bride (us).

So, in His communion time with me, Jesus, in a still small voice, put forth this proposition…Since married couples are considered single in My Father’s eyes (and the two shall be one), and single people are already single, tell everybody in your Young Adult Sunday School Class to marry Me! Let’s elope before you have time to get lost again!

My prayer for singles…

Dear Heavenly Father: Please protect the intimacy and oneness you have instituted in the relationships of courting young peoples and other couples in general. For it is only with Your protection can they guard their hearts against temptation and keep it from all hurt, harm and influences from outsiders. It is also my prayer that You keep their hearts focused on Your nuptial vows so that their spirits may become one in Your sight. Never allow the couples to ignore or turn from seeking solace from each other before they abandon all hope in You and in reconciliation. I pray this prayer in the Matchless Name of Christ Jesus, Amen!

Scripture Lesson: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one. Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate.” Mark 10:7-9.

I would venture to say that if you are honest, very few people could look back on their life choices and declare…Oh well, what’s done is done and just haphazardly moved on.

According to a recent article in Reader’s Digest, in 2020, a World Regret Survey was conducted among 15,000 people in 105 countries and 82% of them said that harboring regrets was at least an occasional part of their life; 21% said they feel regrets all the time, and only 1% said they never feel regrets.

So, I invite you to take a moment to quickly look back on your own life and identify a situation or circumstance that you wished you had done differently. Examples could be finished college, or declined a marriage proposal, or had a baby, or asked for forgiveness, or retract an outburst…etc.

The one percenters who said they never allow themselves to feel regret could be because they say that harboring that mindset is a recipe for unhappiness. But what they do not realize is just by extinguishing oneself from feeling regrets does not free them from shame and sorrow. In other words, that mindset still prevents them from getting a restful night of sleep. And it can also consign you to make the same mistake over again. Any time a situation makes you feel guilty, you need to deal with it and put it in its proper place.

Relationship councilors have identified four kinds of regrets:

• Connection Regrets – Relationships, family and loved ones.
• Moral Regrets – To violate one’s own values…pride oneself on being a loving person, truthful, Christian, etc. Or not living up to taking good care of oneself health-wise…like overeating.
• Foundation Regrets – You did or did not do something that affected the course of your life in a way you didn’t like…getting that diploma, etc.
• Boldness Regrets – These are those regrets that you could kick yourself for not taking a chance at life: Approaching another person, bought a lottery ticket…etc.

You must take the time to analyze and manage your regrets or it can be poison for your well-being. And we’re talking healthwise. Signs of harboring regrets are implicated (manifested) in depression and anxiety and can affect your hormones and immune system and can wreck havoc on your sleep patterns.

Biblical Solutions For The Problems Of Regrets

Sometimes it’s hard for you to analyze yourself. But first let’s see how Frank Sinatra identified and handled his regrets.

The holy bible says that regret is to show sorrow or remorse over something that has happened or that we have done. Regret can also be a sense of disappointment over what has not happened, such as regretting wasted years. In some places in the Bible, we read where God expresses regret over a situation he engaged in. However, we know that God does not make mistakes. But I learned from my pastor that to understand the true meaning of a principle or biblical doctrine, we must know the root of some words. And the Hebrew root word for regret is ‘to sigh’. So, when scripture references God’s regret, it is to be translated, God sighed…knowing that man would choose to be disobedient and would then have to suffer the consequences for sin. To be redeemed, all mankind has to do is to accept God’s Son, Jesus Christ!

Remember that God is omniscience…all knowing…! Man is not!

One of the greatest examples I could find in the Bible about how to rectify a regret between two people was found in 2 Corinthians 7:5-13. Both parties were really struggling with their feelings concerning a misunderstanding. I invite you to study those passages. You will see where neither Paul, Phillip nor the Corinthian people suffered any mishaps because God worked it all out.

How do you deal with regret and guilt in the Bible? In Psalm 51:1-2, the Bible tells us to confess our sins to God and that God will blot out the guilt from our sins. “Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy steadfast love; according to thy abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin!”

5 Bible Verses to Help You Let Go of Past Mistakes and Regrets

• 2 Corinthians 5:17, God says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
• Isaiah 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”
• Exodus 23:20, “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.”
• Job 17:9, “The righteous keep moving forward, and those with clean hands become stronger and stronger.”
• Philippians 3:13-14, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Would you not agree, that it is amazing how many of our superstitious ways revolve around death, hell and the grave? A few decades ago, I attended a writer’s workshop and the facilitator gave the class a list of subjects to write about. His instructions were that the students had to also include research as to how the superstition evolved in the first place. The teacher also said that us attendees would also grade each of the student’s presentations.

It was at that moment that I looked across the class room and saw a classmate put his hand to his mouth and yawn. Some silly superstitious girl mouthed,’God bless you’. I quietly smiled to myself and said, that’s it! That’s what I’m going to write about and I will entitle my paper ‘The Yawn Reflex’.

Okay, I’m not going to give you 10 helpful bible verses about superstitions, but I will allow you to read my paper on yawning and sneezing.

Today, we believe that it shows good manners to cover your mouth and to say excuse me after a broad and noisy yawn. Well, originally, good manners had nothing to do with it. In the ancient days, it was believed that the Devil made a person yawn so that he could gain access into the body and cause that peron grave danger. If that person is observed yawning he would say excuse me because he knew that yawning was contagious and would cause the second person to yawn, too. Thus putting that person in grave danger. So the first yawner would say ‘excuse me’ for putting that person in grave danger. The Hindu people would snap their fingers three times to counter the Devil antics.

The Medical doctors tell us that yawning can be due to sleepiness, exhaustion, shallow breathing or observation. Also, one of the first exercises that a new born baby performs is to stretch and yawn after its body breathes in fresh air. Medical scientists believe that there is a yawn center in the brain that is activated by our lungs and under certain conditions cause us to yawn.

Moral of the story:

Proverbs 3:5-7: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.“

“Now take sneezing“

How many “Gesundheits” does a person get after sneezing? And do you know what it means? Well it means, “God bless you.” The custom of asking God’s blessing initiated with early man who believed that the spirit resided in the air and since we breathe air in to our heads, it stands to reason that the spirit resided in the head. A sneeze would accidentally expel the spirit. So a person would ask God to put it back. The act of bowing towards the sneezer was also counter-magic. For it meant, “May your soul not escape.”

Moral of the story:

Romans 12:2:  “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

The Climax:

Now imagine being in a room filled with sneezers and yawners. This combination of guests could be fatal. Don’t forget, a yawn gave the Devil access into the body and a sneeze could expel your good spirit. Thus leaving your body defenseless. The spirit of the Devil would be exposed out in the room trying to gain entrance into someone else; Gesundheits being shouted aloud from across the room; some guests bobbing up and down towards the sneezer; and the yawners approaching others and saying I’m sorry, I’m sorry for infecting you. What a hilarious scene from an Austin Powers movie.

(Leave with a big yawn, cover your mouth and say excuse me. Next, give out a loud sneeze. After the audience responds with Gesundheits say….Oh, Well.)

Jonah was so mad with God that he tried to commit suicide. He was so depressed that he left the city and climbed a hill where he sat out in the hot sun near a small bush. God caused the bush to grow large leaves that shaded Jonah all day and acted like an umbrella. God also sent a cool breeze to calm Jonah down. Soon Jonah fell asleep and when he awoke the next day the plant had died. Now Jonah was really mad at God.

God could read Jonah’s mind and knew how angry Jonah was with Him. God spoke to Jonah and asked him why he was so concerned about a little old plant that Jonah had not even planted or watered. Why was Jonah acting so hurt that the plant had only lived for one day and then died? God was wondering what was the big deal?

Jonah could not answer God. He did not know why he felt that way about a little old plant. Then God said to Jonah, “Just as you are concerned about that little plant, I am more concerned about that great city called Nineveh. It is a town that has more than 120,000 people and a lot of animals in it. At first they did not know Me. But now they know right from wrong.” God asked that arrogant, misguided man whose thoughts were only of an insignificant plant, should I have not taken pity on Nineveh and saved them?

God taught Jonah a very important lesson. To draw people to Himself in order to offer them eternal life, God will use messengers to speak the word, mammals and nature to challenge doubters, plants and animals to protect fools, and the Holy Spirit to convict stubborn hearts. The universal message here is that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Hello…Hello…Hello…to all my followers out there in cyberspace. Yes, I have deputized all of you guys to claim the title of a cyber-deputy whenever you take it upon yourself to share any of my conversation blogs with your acquaintances. I am particularly hopeful that you will want to share this week’s blog because it will be the beginning (Part One) of me relating the entire Bible story of Jonah and The Great Fish in several weekly parts.

In June of 2003, I had an opportunity to teach the biblical story of Jonah and the Whale to a group of young married couples. I had to do some serious praying because I knew that in order to maintain their attention and attendance for the next four weeks, I would have to call on the Holy Spirit to instruct me on how to deliver the moral of the story: God’s universal message of how He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that who so ever believed in Him would obtain eternal life.

Knowing that each family had multiple things that demanded their attention: like jobs to contend with, small children to care for, household chores, intense time for bible reading and unexpected situations clamoring for their attention… my job was not going to be easy. So, like I said, I had a little talk with Jesus and told Him all about my problem. As I started the chapters, I became excited as the Holy Spirit began to help me paraphrase the verses by incorporating colloquialism phrases used in casual communication. (This method of storytelling would allowed the students to actually become Jonah and to relive Jonah’s experiences with God.) The students even suggested that they participate by performing some role playing of Jonah’s actions.

FOCUS:

• God is Ruler over all the universe
• God is Judge over all the universe
• God is everywhere in the universe at the same time
• God controls nature, events and people everywhere all the time

INTRODUCTION:

The Bible story about a prophet named Jonah helps us to better understand Who God is and all that God is capable of doing. This Old Testament story is about Jonah’s disobedience and how he tried to run away from God and do his own thing. Because of Jonah’s action God made a fish perform like a submarine; a warring nation resemble a crying baby; a plant evolve into an umbrella and an arrogant man stripped of his contrite heart. God did all of this to show love to the world and to show Jonah that God is in control of everything.

PROGRESSION OF EVENTS:

A prophet is a man or woman selected by God to receive His divine message and then go and share the message with others. Sometimes the message is good news and sometimes it is bad news. Which ever it is it doesn’t matter. The prophet still has to deliver the message even if it means the people will get so angry that they will want to kill him.
