Did you know that originally the word ‘gospel‘ denoted a person bearing some kind of news to the populous…good or bad…akin to a gossiper. (The Greek word is “euangelion” for bearing good news, and if that was the case, the person was given a reward). Much later, the reward gift was discontinued and the Greek word just stood for good news. The English word for good news is “gospel”.
Now before I can proceed with this week’s blog, I have to show you something. Look at God! First, he eliminated ‘bad news’ from the definition of the Greek word “euangelion“. He allowed “angel and El” to remain. The English word “gospel” i.e., “good message”, is the equivalent of the Greek word “euangelion.” (Check out the spelling of the Greek word: (E-V-A-N-G-E-L).
(To my readers...As this blog post began to take shape, I was blessed and amazed at the ingenuity of our All-knowing God.)
Now we can proceed with the definition of “GOSPEL”
One of the first tasks a seasoned Christian knows is that they should be able to witness to a total stranger and explain the reasons why we disciples of Christ believe He is truly the Son of God because of what He did on and off the Cross.
- Followers of Jesus Christ believe in the method of His virgin birth as recorded in the Holy Bible.
- Jesus’ mission was to become a substitute unto death for the disobedience and sins of mankind (initially committed by the first human beings, Eve and Adam.
- After preaching and teaching the populous for some 33 years about the Salvation (saving) Plan God had put in place for sinful mankind and all other things created, Jesus suffered, bled and died on an old rugged wooden cross.
- He was placed in an unmarked borrowed grave; but after thee days Jesus rose alive and returned miraculously to His Father in Heaven.
- You can read about all of these events, know as The Good News (“euangelion”) in the first 4 Books of the New Testament Christian Bible known as Matthew, Mark , Luke and John.
Because Jesus suffered, bled and died for my sins and yours and everything else that was created, we, His believers, are called to go into the highways and byways proclaiming the “Good News” of God. (The gospel of God; Mark 1:14) (God concerning His Son: Romans 1:1) (2 Thess. 1:8) (Rev.1 4:6) (Eph. 6:15)
YES, God stressed the truth out of one word…”euangelion“. May we, too, be obedient and do likewise.
